Endogeny Policy

The Journal of Virtual Exchange is committed to minimising endogeny and maintaining
independent editorial decision-making. For the purposes of this policy, an endogenous
article is a published research article, practice report, keynote article, or other peer-
reviewed scholarly contribution in which at least one author is a current Editor-in-Chief,
Associate Editor, Editorial Board member, Guest Editor, or reviewer for the journal.

Because JVE publishes on a continuous basis, the journal monitors endogeny by
calendar year. In any calendar year, the proportion of peer-reviewed scholarly articles
with at least one author who is a current editor, editorial board member, guest editor, or
reviewer of the journal must not exceed 25%.

Submissions from Editors-in-Chief, Associate Editors, Editorial Board members, Guest
Editors, reviewers, or other individuals closely connected with the journal are not
prohibited, but they are subject to additional safeguards. Such submissions are handled
by an independent editor with no conflict of interest. The submitting editor, board
member, guest editor, or reviewer has no access to the peer-review process, reviewer
identities, editorial discussions, or decision-making for their own manuscript. At least
two independent reviewers are assigned, and reviewers must not have conflicts of
interest with the author(s).

If the annual proportion of endogenous articles approaches the 25% threshold, the
Editors-in-Chief will take corrective action, which may include postponing consideration
of internally authored submissions, limiting such submissions, or declining submissions
where independent editorial handling cannot be ensured.

This policy applies to regular submissions and Special Issue submissions alike.
