Abstract

This opening article for the Special Issue entitled Virtual Exchange and the Development of Transferable Skills: A Review of Practices Across Disciplines is setting out the current global workplace context, and discusses how Virtual Exchange and Task-Based Language Teaching can play their part in developing transferable skills and boosting participants’ employability.

Author Biography

Robert O'Dowd, Universidad de León

Robert O'Dowd is Full Professor for English Studies at the Universidad de León, Spain. He has published extensively on the application of Virtual Exchange in higher education and has been invited to be plenary speaker at international conferences in the US, Asia and across Europe. He is currently coordinating the Erasmus+ European Policy Experiment ‘Virtual Innovation and Support Networks for Teachers’ (VALIANT). His most recent book is Internationalising Higher Education and the Role of Virtual Exchange (2023, Routledge) and he was recently listed in Stanford University’s ‘Ranking of the World Scientists: World's Top 2% Scientists’.
