Abstract

Welcome to this special issue of the Journal of Virtual Exchange, featuring eight engaging contributions that highlight the transformative potential of virtual exchange (VE) for education. Arising from works presented at the International Virtual Exchange Conference in 2023, hosted by the Brazilian Association for International Education (FAUBAI) and São Paulo State University (UNESP) in São Paulo, Brazil, this collection consists of seven practice reports and one research article, offering valuable insights into innovative pedagogies, intercultural collaboration, and professional development. We are gratified and delighted to present these works that reflect the increasing diversity and depth of VE practices worldwide.

Author Biographies

Ana Cristina Biondo Salomão, São Paulo State University

Ana Cristina Biondo Salomão is Associate Professor at the Department of Modern Languages and in the Postgraduate Program in Linguistics at São Paulo State University (UNESP). She is currently an Assistant Provost for International Affairs and she has helped design and implement the Brazilian Virtual Exchange (BRaVE) Program along with the Brazilian Association for International Education (FAUBAI). 

Stephanie Swartz, Mainz University of Applied Sciences

Stephanie Swartz is Professor Emeritus from the School of Business, Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Germany, with over 30 years of experience in teaching International Business Communication. Drawing on her wide range of experience in virtual exchange, Stephanie Swartz has presented at international conferences and published on the subject of global virtual team projects and their importance for experiential learning and professional development. Furthermore, she serves as a consultant for collaborative online international learning (COIL). Her present research topics include developing students’ AI literacy at institutions of higher learning through virtual exchange.

D. Joseph Cunningham, Georgetown University

Joe Cunningham is Associate Professor of German at Georgetown University. His research has explored the interface of virtual exchange and: second language pragmatics, multiliteracies instruction, teacher education. He serves as associate editor for the Journal of Virtual Exchange.
